Relations with El Salvador

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of El Salvador and the Sovereign Order of Malta were established in December 1950. In 1979, a Postal Agreement was signed.

More than 70 years of diplomatic relations between the Order of Malta and El Salvador trace the history of great friendship. Even during the most difficult and hard times, the Order of Malta has continued with tenacity and will to assist the Salvadoran population.
The humanity activities in the country – that have mainly concerned the healthcare sector and assistance during natural disasters- are proof of the great collaboration between El Salvador and the Order of Malta.
Such excellent relations have been reinforced through the signature of various agreements among which the Cooperation Agreement signed in 2013 is the most important as it allows the Order of Malta to improve its work in the country.

VISITS TO EL SALVADOR:
● From 13-17 February 2016 there was a State Visit of the Grand Master Fra’ Matthew Festing to El Salvador. He had the opportunity to meet with Salvador Sanchez Ceren, President of the Republic of El Salvador, and with Hon. Lorena Guadalupe Peña Mendoza, President of the Legislative Assembly. During the visit, the then Grand Chancellor of the Order of Malta Albrecht von Boeselager met with Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of El Salvador, Hugo Martinez Bonilla. On occasion of the State Visit, the Grand Master and the Grand Chancellor also visited SICA headquarters and met with the Secretary General, Victoria Velasquez de Aviles.
● In 1992, the Grand Master Fra’ Andrew Bertie visited El Salvador.

VISITS TO THE SOVEREIGN ORDER OF MALTA:
● On September 2024, the Grand Chancellor of the Sovereign Order of Malta, Riccardo Paterno di Montecupo, received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of El Salvador, Alexandra Hill Tinoco. The meeting highlighted the strong relationship between El Salvador and the Order, testified also by the many high-level visit over the past 50 years.
● On April 2023, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador Adriana Mira was received by the Grand Chancellor Riccardo Paterno di Mintecupo in the Magistral Palace in Rome. The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs thanked the Order and its Salvadoran Association for the numerous health and social care activities it carries out in the country.
● In 2022, a meeting between El Salvador’s Foreign Minister Alexandra Hill Tinoco and Grand Chancellor Albrecht Boeselager was held in Rome.
● In 2021, El Salvador’s Foreign Minister Alexandra Hill Tinoco was received by Grand Chancellor Albrecht Boeselager at the Magistral Villa in Rome. During the visit – held on the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations – it was discussed how to further expand the work carried out by the Order of Malta’s Salvadoran Association, with specific reference to training public health professionals.
● On October 2019, the then Order of Malta’s Secretary General for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Stefano Ronca, received Victor Lagos Pizzati, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of El Salvador on 9th October in the Magistral Palace.
● The Honourable Sr. Oscar Armando Pineda Navas, President of the Supreme Court of Justice if the Republic of El Salvador, paid a courtesy visit to the Order of Malta on 15th September 2015. He was received by the the Grand Hospitaller, Dominique Prince de La Rochefoucauld-Montbel.
● On 23rd February 2009, the Salvadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs Marisol Argueta de Barillas visited the Magistral Palace. She was received by the Grand Master Fra’ Matthew Festing.
